About Me:
My name is Nichmarie Soto Bonilla, trained in clinical psychology with a focus on health psychology. This focus allows me to work with individuals who are dealing with chronic illnesses (hypertension, diabetes, cancer, etc.) and the psychological distress or disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) that it may cause. Utilizing evidence-based models like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, and solution-focused therapy among other theoretical frameworks, I accompany the individual in their therapy process, identify their needs and work to achieve their goals. My aim is to help you navigate dealing with the emotional aspects of having a chronic condition. Also, being a caregiver of a loved one with a medical condition or a healthcare provider can have its impact on psychological well-being. This is a safe space for you as well.
Education and Training:
- University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, B.A. Psychology
- Ponce Health Sciences University, Ph.D. Clinical Psychology
- The University of Kansas Medical Center, Post doctorate in Clinical Health Psychology with emphasis in Onco-Psychology
My pre-doctoral internship was at Hospital del Maestro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As part of my internship, I was involved in psychological screenings in the cancer, gynecology, diabetes, obesity and cardiology clinics. Alongside other interns, I facilitated a group therapy for chronic pain. Health education was offered to patients about many topics as well as attending to the various physician consultations throughout the hospital. My postdoctoral experience was more specialized as it was in Onco-Psychology and that provided experience working directly with patients with cancer, their families, and caregivers as well as healthcare professionals. In both internship and post doctorate I have done psychological assessments for bariatric and spinal cord stimulator surgery and bone marrow transplant. All of these experiences have helped grow and define my interest in passion for health psychology. The population I work with is adults and older adults and can also provide therapy sessions in Spanish.
